In City Of Bones, Clary is still having a hard time adjusting to being a shadow hunter. She has a mind block in her mind that is holding information that she had a long time ago. Hodge thinks that if they find those memories, they could find the mortal cup before Valentine. Valentine wants to use the cup to kill shadow hunters. To find the memories they contact the Silent Brothers. They can read anyone's memories. They couldn't get hers, but did find a name. The name was Magnus.
They tracked down Magnus and went to the party he was throwing. There they met him and he said that he was the one that put the block there. Clary was shocked when she found out that her own mother was the one who told him to put it there. He said he couldn't undo it and that it will go away by time. Meanwhile, Simon got turned into a rat and is lost.
