LOTF Responce

The world, that understandable and lawful world, was slipping away.  Once there was this and that; and now--and the ship had gone. [... Jack refusing to give Piggy the floor when he has the conch...]
"The rules!" shouted Ralph.  "You're breaking the rules!"
"Who cares?"
Ralph summoned his wits.
"Because the rules are the only thing we've got!"
But Jack was shouting against him.
"Bollocks to the rules!  We're strong--we hunt!  If there's a beast, we'll hunt it down!  We'll close in and beat and beat and beat--!" (91)

This certain section of the book shows how Jack is going wild by not having any civilization. Ralph on the other hand is smart and still wants to remain in their old ways of rules and being civil. Piggy is the one that is trying to make listen, but no one cares what he has to say. I feel bad for Piggy and think he needs a chance. Jack needs to calm down and think of other people. I agree with Ralph. If I had to look from Jack's side, I would he is looking for more long term survival with hunting.

This passage is important to the book because it shows how everyone's sanity is different. It shows how Jack is losing control and forgetting how they need rules. Ralph still has most of his sanity, but it was hard for him that the boat was gone. Finally, Piggy shows that it is urgent to have organization and it shows that he is growing impatient with Jack. This whole passage shows person vs person and person vs self.

  1. Anna, I agree with what you wrote. This passage in the book is an important one because it does show that Jack is no longer trying to live a civilized life. He is cruel to Piggy and I feel sorry for Piggy too. You said it well when you wrote person vs person and person vs self. I think that is what is happening in the book at this point.
